Women’s Empowerment

The foundation of current programs is the equal provision of educational and training opportunities for both sexes under the same legal standards regarding admission procedures. Whether concerning the Department of Scholarships program for international scholarships or about postgraduate studies in Iraq, the proportion of scholarships aimed at women has significantly increased.

Administratively, the unit is associated with the office of the university president, within the framework of the ministry and its connected formations, and within the context of a shared goal to advance the position of women in management and leadership, combat all types of discrimination, and create public policies that ensure equal chances for both sexes at all levels, starting with regulating equal opportunities at work. Gender equality in middle and senior administrative and leadership positions follows admission to all academic programmes across all types and fields.

The Iraqi government believes that integrating the relationship between the sexes is an ideal way to promote and protect human rights and fulfill most areas of human rights. Men and women are treated equally in all respects, including the right to work, economic rights, education, and health.

The Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has drawn up a plan to enhance women’s participation in economic development, including unifying the retirement age for both sexes and preventing discrimination between the sexes in terms of wages, job type, field, and working hours. As well as enabling women to practice administrative work without obtaining prior approval. To combat discrimination within the framework of work, the labor system established several equal rights and duties between men and women, such as equal wages in the event of equal value and quality of work, complete equality in job search subsidies, and equality in training programs to obtain work. Individuals, organizations, institutions, and others have the right to file a report or complaint in matters of violation of labor laws with regard to equal pay.

Accordingly, the Islamic University guarantees all citizens the right to free education without any discrimination, believing in the importance of education in achieving sustainable development and realising human rights. Including: The university’s policies stipulated the necessity of “providing the state with public education.” The general education policy emphasised free education in all its types and stages. She also emphasised linking education at all stages to the state’s general development plan, which aims to achieve a strong partnership between men and women.

The educational system in Iraq is based primarily on equality between men and women in all its aspects, whether with regard to admission and enrollment mechanisms, academic curricula, tests, the qualifications of teachers and lecturers, or the quality of educational facilities and equipment. Women are more interested in this aspect of positive discrimination, especially with the continued establishment of a number of colleges and departments for girls, such as the College of Science for Girls at the Islamic University. In addition, it prohibits women from studying for a diploma in this college in accordance with the controls of the Department of Research and Development at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
