Sustainable Development Goals Drive Volunteer Efforts by Faculty of Islamic Sciences Staff

Islamic University, Najaf
As part of efforts to promote and deepen understanding of sustainable development goals, Assistant Professor Zahraa Mohammed Hussein Saeed, a member of the teaching staff in the Department of Finance and Banking at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences, designed and implemented a mural illustrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as part of her voluntary community work.
Speaking about the initiative and the values it reflects, Dr Saeed emphasised that sustainable development is a defining concept of the modern era, centred on achieving economic and social progress in a manner that meets present needs without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their own. She explained that sustainable development rests on three core pillars — the environment, the economy, and society — and strives to create a fair and balanced use of resources that guarantees long-term stability and equity.

She noted that the global community is working towards an ambitious agenda to end poverty, safeguard the planet, and uphold peace and prosperity for all by 2030. The mural highlights the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which address diverse social and economic development priorities.
Dr. Saeed added that realising these goals requires collective action by governments, institutions and individuals alike, to build a dignified, secure life for all, supported by a healthy environment, a resilient economy and an equitable society.
